During the US occupation of Japan after World War II, a number of souvenirs were produced for the Occupation Forces soldiers. One of the most famous of these is the ‘Sukajan’ (souvenir jacket).
Yokosuka, the city from which the term is said to have originated, has been home to an American naval base to the present day, which was also once a base for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Also, in Kiryu, which has long been a centre of the textile industry, female craftsmen – some of them war widows – sewed large numbers of souvenir jackets.
In this work, I use the motifs of these two places, Yokosuka and Kiryu, and the souvenir jackets, to imagine and depict the layers of Japanese society – war and post-war – and the people who lived through them.
